IIEE-UAE PEE Mentoring Lecture on Protection Coordination for PEE Batch 17 Aspirants

Institute of Integrated Electrical Engineers of the Philippines – UAE Chapter (IIEE-UAE) last February 13, 2025 held a highly successful online mentoring lecture for the Professional Electrical Engineer (PEE) Batch 17 aspirants on the crucial topic of Protection Coordination. The lecture took place via Zoom from 8:00 PM to 11:30 PM and was led by Engr. Farley James Aguilar, a proud member of PEE Batch 16, alongside his fellow co-PEE’s from the same batch. A total of 14 participants recorded during the lecture, which includes PEE mentoring team and aspirants.

The lecture aimed to provide the aspirants with a comprehensive understanding of protection coordination techniques, an essential skill for PEE candidates involved in electrical engineering. Engr. Aguilar’s session focused on the fundamentals of calculation methods for protection coordination, emphasizing the importance of accuracy and efficiency in designing protective systems, such as approaching the calculation process from the Main supply towards the load side.

To ensure a well-rounded learning experience, the session incorporated both practical and theoretical approaches. The aspirants were introduced to Excel-based calculation methods for protection coordination. This method, widely used in the industry, allowed the candidates to get hands-on experience with real-life calculation scenarios. They were also shown how to use ETAP  simulation software, which is commonly employed for system protection design and analysis. Engr. Aguilar demonstrated how ETAP could be used to model and simulate protection schemes, offering an insightful comparison between manual calculation and software simulation results.

Throughout the session, Engr. Aguilar, with the assistance of his co-PEE’s, engaged the participants with practical examples and step-by-step instructions, allowing them to directly apply their learning through the simulation software and Excel. The mentoring team also encouraged active participation, answering the aspirants’ questions and providing guidance on overcoming common challenges in protection coordination.

The event proved to be an invaluable learning opportunity for the PEE Batch 17 aspirants, equipping them with the essential tools and knowledge needed to excel in their professional exams. The collaboration between the mentors and the mentees was seamless, demonstrating the strength of the IIEE-UAE community in fostering continued education and professional development.

Engr. Aguilar expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to mentor the next generation of electrical engineers and emphasized the importance of mastering protection coordination in ensuring the safety and reliability of electrical systems.
